Celebration Time (Come On)
July is a month of celebrations. From Canada Day on July 1, to the 400th anniversary of Quebec City on July 3rd, American Independence Day on July 4, Bastille Day in France on July 14th and numerous independence days in Central and South America, this month is exploding with fireworks and celebrations. So I thought it an idea to narrow the scope of the celebrations from nations to individuals, and think of all the people in our lives that we would like to celebrate this month as well.
Yes, it is true that we honour these people on their birthdays, anniversaries and assorted other days during the year (Mother’s or Father’s Day, Valentine’s, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, etc.) We also celebrate them when they achieve some milestone in their lives. But wouldn’t it be wonderful to celebrate these individuals just for being who they are and not because of some achievement or because the calendar suggests that we do. Let’s surprise them when they least expect it with our gratitude for being in our lives. Let’s shower them with random acts of kindness and expect nothing in return. Let’s celebrate their flaws as well as their strengths.
While we’re at it, maybe we should consider celebrating ourselves as well. Just a thought, but how about acknowledging how wonderful it is to be us - warts, insecurities and all. Let’s spend some time in quiet reflection and recognize ourselves for just being us.
I wish you a wonderful and celebratory July.
